Surgical/Dental Services

The staff at Scott Mill Animal Hospital provides surgery for sterilization (spay/neuter), soft tissue masses or injuries, cancer, intestinal blockages/foreign bodies, and some orthopedic problems. Anesthesia always has risks involved and is a primary concern, not only for our patients owners, but for our staff. To minimize the risks we employ pre anesthetic bloodwork, IV catheterization with IV fluid therapy, modern anesthesia monitoring including ECG, Blood Pressure, Pulse Oximetry, Body Temperature, Respiration Rates, and Heart Rates along with heat support to maintain proper body temperature.

The anesthesia process initially involves an appropriate sedation injection chosen for a patient’s specific medical condition that includes pain medication to start the post-surgical pain management. When the patient is relaxed the IV catheter is placed and the anesthesia is induced (started) with an injection of Propfol if not contraindicated in our patient at that time. A tracheal tube is placed and oxygen with a controlled amount of anesthetic gas is inhaled by the patient to maintain the anesthesia until the procedure is completed. Immediately the above mentioned monitors are employed to track our patient during this time of increased risk. Following surgery the anesthetic gas is turned off and the patient is allowed to acclimate to room levels of oxygen, wake up, and then is extubated (breathing tube removed).

Internal Medicine

Monitoring the proper function of our pets multiple systems is critical to overall health. When one of these systems has irregular function the recognition of the system involved can employ different diagnostic tests and the interpretation of those results by our trained doctors. The tests involved include, but are not limited to:

1) Blood panels analyzed on our calibrated in house machines, or submitted to an outside laboratory
2) Radiographs (digital) with direct linkage to Board Certified Radiologists for review if additional expertise is desired.
3) Ultrasound (Board Certified Internist visits the clinic by appointment for this service)
4) Biopsies and Fine Needle Aspirates
5) Cytology

The information from the specific tests chosen for your pet will help formulate an appropriate treatment protocol that will be discussed and implemented in partnership with the patients owner.
